It’s normal for hearing to change over time

But it doesn’t mean you have to miss out on your conversations.
Everyone experiences changes to their hearing. Over time, conversations and sounds are not like the way we remembered them.

Good news is that this is normal. Our hearing can be impacted by loud noises, earwax buildup, ear infections and from natural changes as we grow older. For some of these causes, a visit to a hearing care specialist can make a big difference. And for other causes, there is incredible technology available to help you get your hearing back to the way you remembered it.

It can be difficult to know if your hearing is the same as it was before. Here are some typical signs that your hearing has changed.

Noisy places seem extra…noisy

Do restaurants and public places seem more noisy? Do conversations tend to get drowned out by the sound of the background music? If it is more difficult to have a group conversation or filter out the background noise, it may be because your hearing has changed.

More people seem to be mumbling

Is it difficult to follow your conversations because other people seem to be mumbling? This could be because your hearing has changed and your ears are not as adept to picking out individual sounds as they used to be.

Voices on phone calls are not clear

Are phone calls difficult unless you’re in a quiet place? Do you need your phone’s volume to be turned all the way up in order to make out the voice on the line? Over time, your hearing can change so it is not as in tune to the voices on a phone. And this could also be the case when you’re watching movies or television.

“Pardon me?” or “What?”

Do you need to ask other people to repeat themselves more often? Is it difficult to hold a conversation if the other person is not directly facing you? It can be a hassle to always have to ask others to repeat themselves – and sometimes it may be easier to simply guess what the other person is saying.

You have to deliberately listen

One of the biggest signs of a change in your hearing is that you have to put effort into listening to others. It takes extra effort to listen if you’re unable to completely understand the first time.

Hearing challenges are normal

Everyone experiences changes to their hearing. Over time, conversations and sounds are not like the way we remembered them.

It’s normal for hearing to change. Around a third of Canadians experience hearing loss that impacts how well they can hear speech. When we look into the trends in specific age groups, it is clear that changes in hearing impacts the vast majority of adults.

For Canadians between 40 and 60 years old, around 40% experience hearing loss that makes it more difficult to understand speech. This number jumps to over 75% for Canadians over 60 years old.

You’re in the majority if your hearing changes.
